South Suburban Stops Sandburg Women Behind Big 3rd Quarter

The Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team took a lead into halftime, but a big third quarter sent South Suburban to a 64-45 victory over the Chargers on Thursday afternoon at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

KEY MOMENTS

  • Sandburg (5-8) closed the second quarter on an 11-1 run, with a 3-pointer from Hailey Lovetinsky (Overland Park, Kan./Spring Hill) sending the Chargers to a 30-22 halftime lead.
  • The Bulldogs (9-3), among those receiving votes in this week’s NJCAA Division II rankings, outscored Sandburg 23-7 in the third quarter, including 21 of the first 22 points in the half.
  • Back-to-back 3-pointers from Cora Neal (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville) got the Chargers within 43-37 late in the third, but the Bulldogs answered with seven straight points to push their lead to 13 early in the fourth quarter.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Neal went 4 of 6 from beyond the arc to finish with a team-best 12 points. The freshman also added six rebounds.

OTHER TOP CHARGERS
Freshman forward Yvonne Mixon (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) had 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting as well as a team-leading seven boards.

FOR THE BULLDOGS
Tyesha Riggins hit four 3s and had 18 points to lead all scorers. Yasmarella Thompson and Danisha Maggette each added 11 for South Suburban.

UP NEXT
The Chargers will take a brief break before playing in the Cougar Holiday Tournament hosted by Illinois Central from Dec. 28-30. Sandburg opens the tournament against Parkland at noon Dec. 28.
